Discover Comares, the balcony of La Axarquía

Comares is known for being the “Balcony of the Axarquia”, for its spectacular views, it is one of the jewels of the region, its Moorish layout, winding streets, small squares and hidden corners make this town a place of legend.

From any point of altitude in La Axarquía you can see a little white spot on a steep hill, that is Comares, a privileged place at about 700 meters of altitude, with 360º panoramic views of the whole region and the Eastern Costa del Sol, without a doubt a privileged place because of its enclave.

Perched on a rock at 700 meters

The village emerges on a rocky outcrop at about 700 meters above sea level, carved into the rock. The road to Comares is winding and we recommend doing it from Velez Malaga, where you will find fewer bends and a more varied landscape, running through fields of vines, avocados and mangoes. Once we enter Comares the first thing we find is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, which is the busiest place in the village, with the famous “Balcón de la Axarquía” and a restaurant where you can eat great food, typical of the area.

A picturesque white village

Comares is a village founded by the Focal Greeks, but its architecture and layout is entirely Moorish. The route is picturesque, with winding streets, small squares, hidden corners and spectacular viewpoints. The rock on which Comares is built can be seen under white houses, embedded or settling on them, a very characteristic aspect of the town’s architecture.

The comparison with Frigiliana and other white villages is inevitable. Comares has aged wonderfully, it has been well preserved, it is a very clean and well cared for village and a very interesting tourist spot to visit in a morning. Without a doubt, it is one of the towns that has best preserved its Moorish heritage.

Places of tourist interest

It has spectacular viewpoints, such as the Puerta de Málaga, the Balcón de la Axarquía or the views from the wall. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación dates from 1505. The Arab arches of Andalusian influence accompany us throughout the journey through the old town, and we find ceramic mosaics that explain its history, its routes and some of its monuments (the Calle de los Arcos Musulmanes). We highlight the views of the remains of the Baluarte la Tahona Castle. The monument to the Fiestero which is located in the Plaza de los Verdiales, named after a type of folk music from Malaga, and of which Comares has its own variation, “Comares style Verdiales”. The most curious can visit the cemetery, which is included in the tourist route, is a picturesque place, very well maintained and with one of the best views in all of Axarquia. ”

"The villege of La Axarquía that touches the sky"

Comares crowns a rock with its white houses. A climb by car that is totally worthwhile if what you are looking for is beauty, tranquillity, pure air at an altitude of 700 meters. A walk through its little streets full of legends, trying the delicious gastronomy of the place (codillo, migas, lomo, regional wine…) and checking the kindness of its people, is a very gratifying experience.

"A few curves that are worthwhile"

On the way to Comares we find several bends, but which are quickly forgotten as we enjoy the views, the white, well-cared-for streets, the information about the history of this town with a Muslim legacy that is told on every corner of its streets.

"An unknown jewel in the Axarquia"

Calm and beautiful is the tour of Comares. A walk through this town is a pleasure for the senses. Walking through the small streets full of tranquillity is priceless, something that has not yet been spoiled in some villages of La Axarquía.
